Good Marketing Brief

Inflight Briefing: 008

Written by William Henry | Nov 22, 2022 9:19:12 PM

Delivered weekly, the Inflight Briefing is designed as a blueprint for the builder and inspiration for the curious. It's for the purposeful (that's you!) doing marketing for good.

008: Thankful for you

This week (at least here in the US) kicks off the end of year holiday season. A season where your mindset can shift from the daily grind of work to where it really matters: family, friends, a good book, turkey, and stuffing!

People who do purposeful marketing are tempted by the same trap that corporate climbers face — work longer and longer hours to finish the to-do list. Yes, the impact you make really matters. But I’m here to tell you that you really matter too. Make priorities about what needs to get done and what would be nice, focus on one thing at a time, and let the nice things sit until next week.

Heeding my own guidance today and sending you a shorter, yet still important (think: pretzels and cookies only service), list of links perfectly fit to compliment a slice of pie, a last-minute errand run, or an alternative to another puzzle. Enjoy :)

Snackable snippets

What plates need to stay spinning and what can drop?

Donald Miller is full of good ideas, and in this 15-minute podcast he offers lessons for surviving a busy life. On the path to gaining your sanity back, you’re going to have to decide what needs to get done and what can be pushed or dropped, but you may also need to learn how to delegate and keep your texts short if that doesn’t free up enough time.

What are you reading this week?

One of the best parts of a break for me is getting some uninterrupted time in a book. I wish I could tell you exactly what was inside The Generosity Crisis, but I’m flipping it open tomorrow to kick off my Thanksgiving break. I hope you have a good book or movie or podcast on your to-do list this week (also, please tell me if you read/see/hear something good that I should share with everyone else — just hit reply!).

Multitasking is out, and single-tasking is in

A lot of us have heard that multitasking is bad for everyone involved, and none of us were so surprised. But here’s even more reason to focus on one thing at a time and give your entire focus and energy to knocking it out of the park. We hope you use this strategy to knock this short week out of the park, but we also hope that you single-task during those meaningful conversations with your friends and family.

In the news

Some things don’t change much in a week as Twitter still dominates the news cycle. All this negative attention has almost single-handedly created another social platform, Mastodon. The new decentralized platform has grown 20% in just two weeks while Twitter continues to bleed talent. If you’re planning to expand in social, Mastodon may be an opportunity to get on at the start.

The FIFA world cup has begun and the US is still in contention! But there hasn’t been as much fanfare or marketing because fans are upset that FIFA was willing to work with Qatar, which has a terrible human rights record. Also, Germans were further frustrated that Qatar isn’t selling beer at any of the games.

Jeff Bezos, not well known for his philanthropy, recently announced that he’ll give away a majority of his $122 billion fortune before he dies. This is big news for the nonprofit world!

Something for your inspiration folder

Shoot! Nov 17 was last week. Not to worry, someone had the foresight to hit record during this amazing conversation. We are for Good  sat down with Dana Snyder and Noah Barnett to talk about the ins and outs of digital marketing and how to build a framework for success in 2023!
