036: Sweet and salty giving numbers

Giving USA released its much-anticipated annual report this week. If you were hoping for a story with clear plot points, then this won’t be the most enjoyable read.
Josh Birkholz, chairman of the foundation, said, “I go back and forth on whether it’s encouraging or discouraging. There was a 20 to 25% decline in the stock market and an 8% inflation rate, but Americans still gave nearly a half trillion dollars.”
So numbers may be down, but not as far as one could expect. Even if it’s a difficult moment — to say the least — Americans are showing they are committed to their communities and causes.

Marketing ideas for America’s birthday 📖 America’s birthday is just weeks away. Have you bought a gift yet? But more seriously, do you have any timely marketing campaigns rolling out? How the most successful people think 🎥 Polina Pompliano, the author of Hidden Genius, sat down with Kyle Westaway, author of the Weekend Briefing, an incredible newsletter, and talked through the habits of highly successful people. One of my favorite takeaways: We’re defined by the content we regularly consume. Consume high-level content, think at a high level. Consume junk-food content, think at the same level. Challenge accepted! 14 charts that tell today’s AI story 💡 If a picture’s worth a thousand words, then where do charts fit in? These 14 charts give a visual indication of where we’re at with AI today. |
In the news |
Modelo passed Bud Light as the highest-selling beer in the country. Even though Modelo tastes better, this story isn’t really about Americans developing taste.
As we mentioned above, Giving USA dropped its 2023 report. During the last 40 years, charitable giving has dropped only three times. Bad news: 2022 was one of those years.

If you thought AI was only good at making fake videos and funny pictures of the Pope, this week proved us all wrong.
AI is going to give us access to a never-released Beatles single. That’s worth celebrating. This might actually be the single best use of AI I’ve seen so far.
