The campaign that raised $18.5k started with a canceled truckload
Rachel Burris Rodriguez on Sep 24, 2026, 8:15:00 AM
When 21 truckloads of USDA product were canceled on short notice, Second Harvest of East Tennessee didn't call their vendor. They opened their platform, ran the campaign themselves, and turned a funding crisis into $18.5k in donations. More on that below.
This week, we're sharing how to think about analytics before Q4, what data quality problems look like before they become campaign problems, and which donor sequences should already be running.
The take-home template
Seventy-six percent of nonprofits report not having a comprehensive analytics strategy, which means most organizations are making decisions based on partial information. This guide walks through a four-type analytics framework: descriptive (what happened), diagnostic (why it happened), predictive (what will likely happen), and prescriptive (what to do next). It also includes a curated list of fundraising, digital marketing, and program metrics to have on your radar before year-end.
Snackable snippets
The data quality gap growing inside nonprofit CRMs 📖
CCS Fundraising found that difficulties leveraging data for decision-making nearly tripled from 2024 to 2025, and the culprit is usually the records themselves rather than a lack of tools. Abbreviations entered differently by different people, duplicate donor entries, and free-form notes that can't be searched or segmented all quietly undermine confidence in what the data might be telling you. Getting it right starts with standardizing key fields, removing duplicates, and building entry policies your whole team follows before year-end campaigns go live.
Simple stories outperform complex narratives 📖
Fundraising appeals might not always need plot structure. They need a clear story of need and a donor who can change the outcome. This NonProfit PRO piece pushes back on the hero's journey framework many fundraisers rely on, and it's worth reading alongside your year-end conversion data to see which story angles are moving your donors.
Turning event moments into revenue streams 📖
The biggest revenue opportunities at events often come from what happens around them — VIP early-access experiences, strategic auction timing, fund-a-need segments, and peer-to-peer moments led by alumni or board members. House of Friendship uses CRM data to segment post-event communications by giving level and attendance, following up with people who came but didn't give and those who showed interest in auction items but didn't bid.
The 3 campaigns that run on behavioral data 📖
This one's written for commercial teams, but the thinking applies directly to nonprofits heading into year-end. Three campaigns worth having running before Q4: a welcome sequence that gets new donors to their first meaningful moment fast, a re-engagement nudge for people who showed interest but went quiet before completing anything, and a win-back campaign for donors who lapsed without explanation. All three fire on behavioral signals rather than calendar dates.
For your inspiration folder
When 21 truckloads of USDA product were canceled on short notice, the Second Harvest team didn't have time to brief an outside vendor. They ran the campaign themselves, starting with a single email that brought in $12,000. The other $6,500 came from retargeting ads and social campaigns that followed up with people who had already shown interest.
For the first time, they could trace the full donor journey in one place. Being able to show leadership exactly where the $18.5k came from makes the next campaign budget easier to justify.
