Your members are there. Are you activating them?
Rachel Burris Rodriguez on Aug 5, 2026, 9:30:01 AM
Member engagement rarely drops off all at once. It happens gradually, often for reasons that have less to do with what an association offers and more to do with how easy it is to find, how relevant it feels, and whether anyone noticed when a member showed up.
This week is about how to give members a reason to connect with each other, how to make sure your channels are pulling in the same direction, and what a few associations did with very little to activate the community they already had.
The take-home template
Most associations have members who joined with real enthusiasm and gradually faded into the background, and the gap between joining and staying engaged rarely closes on its own. This free kit from HubSpot includes three templates worth adapting for association use: a member journey map to guide new members from first join to active advocate, a member profile template to document what motivates each segment, and a community launch checklist if you're building or rebuilding an online space.

When belonging drives renewal 📖
A yearly conference and a quarterly newsletter used to be enough to make members feel connected. The American Association of Physics Teachers went from relying on two in-person meetings a year to giving members a year-round platform to engage, and their director of membership says members now associate their renewal decision with everything they experienced on the platform throughout the year, not just the annual gathering.
What's really behind low member engagement 📖
Low member engagement is rarely an interest problem. Members disengage when they can't easily find what they joined for, when every email feels like it was written for someone else, or when their participation goes unacknowledged long enough that showing up starts to feel not worth the effort. Cleaner navigation, more segmented communication, and a formal recognition program for active members go further than most associations expect.
Member engagement: Using the right tools to connect 📖
Most associations are already using email, social media, and digital advertising to reach members. The gap is usually in how well those three channels work together. A member who abandons the renewal page, for example, can be reached with a triggered email, retargeted with a social ad, and followed up through display advertising, all from the same behavioral signal, without anyone on the team manually tracking who did what. Bottom line: stop treating each channel as its own separate effort.
For your inspiration folder
An engineering association launched a members-only LinkedIn group moderated by their membership coordinator, and it quickly became the place members went for career advice, industry discussions, and collaborative projects.
An environmental consultants association took a different angle, splitting its membership into early-career, mid-career, and senior leader segments and sending each group content built for where they actually were. Open rates went up, and so did event attendance and retention.
A healthcare association added a mentorship matching program pairing newer members with experienced ones and found it became one of their strongest reasons members stayed.
None of these required a big budget or a new platform. They all started by asking what members already wanted from each other, and how to make it easier to get it.
